We hit the streets of Tokyo once again as the game races to the finish you're basing a game on a license, there's always going to be a little hesitation from the hardcore gamers to give it due time as licensed games have historically had a fairly bad rap. On top of that, when you base a game on a rather cheeseball even if fun film, then you've got yet another hurdle to overcome. Hopefully gamers will look past these aspects of The Fast and the Furious because, quite honestly, there's a lot more to this game than you might expect and what we've seen so far looks very good. We've already covered a bit of its outlying features just before, at and after this year's E3, but today we got a chance to learn about a few new details as well as the "focus" of the game's racing mechanics. One very cool thing is that while the game certainly has a strong emphasis on drifting, it's only half of the experience and it's possible to completely ignore this racing variant and focus solely on street racing. Conversely, if you're tired of installing 700hp turbo engines into stock vehicles and taking them to speeds of 200mph+, you're able to stick solely to the drifting aspect. You'll get the most out of the game by swapping between the two of course, but the game's design allows for a "customized" play through, which is great. One of the main things stressed to us during our latest look at the game is that while the actions of drifting may be focused around pushing your car to the limits and literally driving sideways, the technical element of building a drift car is anything but pushing things to the extreme. Instead, drifting is all about balance - grippy tires vs. non, FR vs. MR drivetrains, a little extra torque vs. a little less weight. The same technical rules apply to the game's driving mechanics as well, meaning that you're given numerous ways to drift and just because your car is slipping sideways doesn't mean you don't have total control. We'll have to see how well this pans out after we've put a few hundred miles on the speedometer, but we can certainly say we're impressed with the team's mindset. The game is set in the open freeways of Tokyo, and as with a number of other open-world driving games you're able to both find "free" racers out on the highways or jump straight to a racing destination, which in this case are deemed Hotspots. Each of the game's eight Hotspots will be frequented by 10 local racers from two different local racing teams. The racers will show up when they feel like, so you may need to come back a few times if you're looking for a specific competitor. One pretty cool thing about the racing teams is that you're given their team's sticker when you defeat them. We're told that in the real underground racing scene in Tokyo, this exchange is a symbol of respect. In the game, when you're wearing another team's sticker on your ride, you'll be given discounts and special deals at upgrade warehouses that they frequent. These will always tie into the team, so you very likely won't get a discount in a store that specializes in drift modifications by wearing the sticker of a street racing team. The Fast and the Furious looks to have a whole lot going for it, and what we've played so far has left us wanting more. There are a ton of cool features here, like the very extensive customization features we've talked about before, and the team seems to really understand the racing scene and wants to make a racer that's true to the sport. Look for the game to hit the streets in the coming This ArticleThe Fast and the Furious [PS]Inspired by the movie series, The Fast and The Furious will immerse players in the underground world of drift racing.
